The Wall

Rugeley Rifle Club has launched our latest crowdfunding campaign to replace the outdoor range wall. Rugeley Rifle Club moved to Wharf Road more than 50 years ago, and the wall has bounded the 100yard outdoor range over that time. But all things come to an end, and the wall is now in need of replacement.

Sport England will match-fund this project, but we need to raise £11,000 of our own, from at least 75 supporters. This money will be spent on replacing the wall, as well as making good the range floor and the roadside pathway. If we reach our stretch goal of £15,000 we can upgrade the side pathway to the 10metre and 50metre ranges, improving wheelchair accessibility.

There are a range of rewards for donors including guitar lessons; afternoon teas; t-shirts and sweatshirts, along with discounted have-a-go and introductory sessions hosted by the club and multi-year membership offers. Make your pledge today to secure outdoor shooting at Rugeley!

International caps at Bisley

Rugeley enjoyed international success, with three members representing Home Nation teams at the Bisley 100 Meeting.

On Friday, Club Chairman Martyn Buttery captained England – an historic double after he also captained the team at Scotland 100 in 2019.

Rich Hemingway and Ryan Williams were both selected to represent Wales. They were joined by friend-of-the-club Liam Webster who earned his first Welsh cap. Liam shot at Rugeley for many years before moving to west Wales some years ago.

England ultimately won the match, scoring 3799/4000.

Richard Hemingway finally broke his run of middling Bisley performances to earn promotion to X-Class, joining Martyn Buttery and Ryan Williams in the top tier. Finishing third in the Weekend Aggregate and equal-fourth in the Grand Aggregate, either result was sufficient for promotion. Rich also won the incidental Prince William of Wales match and placed third in the Centenary Competition.

Vic Tyne placed third in Class for Competition 10 – the 100Yard portion of the Weekend Aggregate.

The meeting was opened by Michael More-Molyneux (Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey), on behalf of the Queen, who is patron of the NSRA. Lord Lieutenants represent the monarch in their county. The week included a number of 1922-inspired competitions, including deliberate and rapid-fire matches using targets from the period.

Rugeley shooter takes Silver at Welsh Championship

Rich Hemingway – Rugeley member and Staffordshire County Captain – was runner up in the Welsh Confined 50Metre Championship on Sunday.

Shooting at Tondu Shooting Club near Bridgend, Richard qualified for the Confined after placing 5th in the Welsh Open Championship on Saturday. Improving on his score from Saturday, he was pipped to the win by Alun Evans. Dave Phelps placed third. Conditions were bright, with the tricky light but gusting winds that Tondu is known for.

Friend of the club, Liam Webster placed fifth in the Confined. Liam shot with distinction at Rugeley for many years before moving away from the West Midlands.

Gold in Cairo for Victoria

Rugeley member Victoria Bradbury won Gold in the individual Junior Women’s event at the ISSF Target Sprint Grand Prix in Cairo. Victoria was joined on the podium by GB teammate Emily Sawyer who won silver.

Victoria went on to win another gold in the Mixed Pairs event with Isaac Steele. Teammates Emily and Arno Turner won Bronze.

Bradbury’s athletics coach, Keith Holt, said: “Victoria has put in a tremendous amount of work into her training. She’s such a dedicated talented athlete, with a lot more improvement to come.”

The team in Egypt were supported by the British Shooting Team Leader, Craig Dower, who said: “Having Target Sprint alongside the ISSF Cairo World Cup allowed a wider audience to view and support this exciting sport.

“The athletes should be proud of their achievements and we look forward to many more competitions where the greater British Shooting family can come together in promoting this challenging discipline. Target Sprint is providing us with a superb platform where we can engage far wider in advertising our sport to all.”

Rugeley supports British Schools Championship

Rugeley members supported the finals of British Shooting’s Schools Championship this week, volunteers acting as helpers and Range Officers. The Championship Finals came to Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock with nearly three hundred young athletes competing in the Air Pistol and Rifle Finals over Tuesday and Wednesday. Local schools came for trial shoots on Thursday with Rugeley providing instructors and coaches.

The competitors, aged 11-18, hailed from 140 schools up and down the country and Gorgs Geikie, the founder and manager of the Schools Championships who was the last pistol shooter to have competed at an Olympics at London 2012 said the enthusiasm and talent proves the event and the sport has a bright future ahead.

Chris Derbyshire, Managing Director at Inspiring healthy lifestyles, the not-for-profit charitable leisure trust which runs Chase Leisure Centre, said: “It was a privilege for Inspiring healthy lifestyles to be able to host the event at Chase Leisure Centre.

“I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the competition days and it was inspiring to see such talented young people from across the country competing as well as children from local schools giving it a go.

“I’d like to thank Cannock Chase Council for their support and look forward to working with British Shooting again in the future to ensure that the event is even bigger and better next time.”

Speaking after the Rifle competition, Gold Coast Commonwealth Games silver medalist, Dean Bale, said: “It’s been great. To see so many young athletes coming through in this grassroots environment is incredible, and I’ve been blown away by the number of participants today.

“When I was younger I was only really exposed to target shooting through the scouts so to see schools now getting involved and offering a new route into shooting is exciting to see.

“There’s a whole range of ages and when we’ve got to the finals of each category the competition has been very close – it’s very tense and great to watch!

“I think the Championships is going to help bring more shooters in at grassroots level to feed up through the Talent Pathway and eventually into the World Class Programme.”

Club bestows Vice Presidency on Local Councillor

At the Club AGM and Awards evening we bestowed an Honorary Vice Presidency on our newest member Cllr Olivia Lyons, in a speech at the evening she commented “It’s an absolute honour to be appointed Honorary Vice President and looks forward to serving and supporting the club in its endeavours”.  Last May, Cllr Lyons became the youngest female Leader of a District/Borough Council when she became Leader of Cannock Chase District Council and is a true Rugeley girl through and through. We’re delighted to see Olivia join our team here at Rugeley Rifle Club.

British Shooting Schools Championship comes to Cannock

Rugeley Rifle Club is proud to support Cannock Chase DC and British Shooting in bringing the National Finals of the British Shooting Schools Pistol and Rifle Championships to Chase Leisure Centre in February 2022.

Gorgs Geikie, London 2012 Olympian and manager of the Schools Championships said “British Shooting are thrilled to bring the National Final to Cannock, the true heart of the country. Athletes and school teams from all over the country will descend to Chase Leisure Centre to tussle to become National Champions of today and potential Olympians and Paralympians of the future.

New clubroom takes shape

Rugeley’s new clubroom is taking shape as the brickwork passes window height. This exciting new space will provide a comfortable social setting adjacent to the current clubroom, which is very much a working environment. A picture window will give a clear view out onto the 100yard firing point.

New club mural unveiled

RRC is delighted to unveil our new mural, generously created by the members of Brereton Youth Volunteering Group. Painted over several days in May and June, this work improves the walkway to our 10metre Air Ranges and 50metre firing point. We offer a huge thanks to Brereton Million for their hard work and hope they thoroughly enjoyed the trial shoots laid on for them afterwards!
